Voting for the Final Params for the Commons Upgrade

:star:Updated dates!!! We will keep proposing Parameter Sets until mid-december!

Commons Upgrade Decision Making Process

Tokenlog is a token weighted curation tool that allows us to gather continuous feedback on the priority of github issues through the use of Quadratic Voting.

The TEC has been using it for crowd decision making - When the whole community is encouraged to submit proposals on a similar topic - in this case designing our economy - to use the collective intelligence and find the best solution for the challenge. The top voted proposals are then sent to Snapshot for the runoff.

Important things to know about this decision making process

  • Proposals are made in the Commons Dashboard
  • You can’t delete your own issues - if you want to delete a proposal, ask someone from the params team for support
  • Votes cannot be taken back on Tokenlog! Use only small amounts for curation and hold back most of your votes until the final debates.
  • Forking existing proposals is encouraged - if you like parts of a proposal, use that design pattern and add the changes you like.
  • When proposing a fork, write “Fork of proposal x” in the title.
  • The runoff will run on Snapshot, and there votes can be re-casted to your new preference if you change your mind.
  • Param parties have already started!

Step by step

Play & Learn - Now until Nov 7th

Learn & Propose - Sun, Nov 7th - Thurs, Nov 18th

  • Param Parties in TEC Discord and in other friendly discords
  • Voting should be done lightly; it only curates for interesting proposals to fork. VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK! TREAD LIGHTLY!
  • Proposals made here probably won’t make the final run-off, but their forks will

Propose & Debate - Fri, Nov 19th - TBD

  • Param Parties in external Discords and Param Debates in our Discord
  • Voting should be done lightly; it only curates for interesting proposals for forking and debating. VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK! TREAD LIGHTLY!
  • Most if not all run-off proposals will be made during this time

Debate & Rock the Vote - TBD

  • No Param Parties, only Param Debates in our Discord.
  • proposals made here will have lower visibility (fewer debates) and will have trouble making it to the runoff.
  • Voting should be done after going to your last debate; VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK!
  • Voting ends during the Sof Gov meeting on Tues.

Stewards Council & Voters Pamphlet Creation - TBD

  • Stewards come together in a call open to the whole community to decide how many proposals are making to the runoff (between 3-5)
  • Because of the potential for votes to be split amongst forked proposals that are similar, the community stewards will choose the top submissions that best represent the community signal for the runoff.

Runoff - TBD

  • The top proposals will be submitted for a Quadratic Ranked Choice voting on Snapshot.
  • Vote for your favorite params in order of preference.
  • Snapshot only has Ranked Choice voting, so new tokens will be minted for all TECH token holders with the square root of their original amounts if we haven’t made a better custom solution.

What if there is a polarized scenario, where 2 different proposals have an evenly split majority of votes in the run-off?

Evenly split majority means that the difference between the votes from first and second place is equal or smaller than 5%. In this case, the authors of these proposals will be invited for an open hack session to find a collaborative solution with the community input.

Yes, 100% support for this time extension. The more time our community has to learn and play with the parameters, the better informed voting we should see.

Ok! We are LIVE!

You can make Params here: https://config.tecommons.org/

Your submissions will show up here for voting: Tokenlog · Token-weighted backlogs

I would like to propose that we retro actively add a few days to the Play and Learn time and a few more days before the runoff so we have time to work on standardizing the run-off proposals and making a digestible voters pamphlet to compare them.

Giving time to make the pamphlet is just being real, thats a lot of work, I think we can push and get something nice enough in a 4 day weekend.

Adding an extra week for Parties also makes sense for a few other reasons

  • It is a great TE education opportunity, let’s do more parties!
  • It’s a great way to do outreach and network with our partner communities
  • The people who play with the Config Dashboard will likely become future TEC Token Holders and fall in love us because of these parties.
  • It would great to have more time to improve the dashboard from user feedback and give time to use it after those improvements.
  • We will have more time to test the actual smart contract deployment.
  • We will undoubtable end up with better Params!

Also… I’ll be honest, the week of the 19th-28th I will be working 1/2 time and would like to be full on for making the voters pamphlet and pushing out the Run-Off

Here is the Timeline I would propose

Step by step

Play & Learn - Now until Nov 7th

Learn & Propose - Sun, Nov 7th - Thurs, Nov 18th

  • Param Parties in TEC Discord and in other friendly discords
  • Voting should be done lightly; it only curates for interesting proposals to fork. VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK! TREAD LIGHTLY!
  • Proposals made here probably won’t make the final run-off, but their forks will

Propose & Debate - Fri, Nov 19th - Thu, Nov 25th

  • Param Parties in external Discords and Param Debates in our Discord
  • Voting should be done lightly; it only curates for interesting proposals for forking and debating. VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK! TREAD LIGHTLY!
  • Most if not all run-off proposals will be made during this time

Debate & Rock the Vote - Fri, Nov 25th - Tues, Nov 30th

  • No Param Parties, only Param Debates in our Discord.
  • proposals made here will have lower visibility (fewer debates) and will have trouble making it to the runoff.
  • Voting should be done after going to your last debate; VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK!
  • Voting ends during the Sof Gov meeting on Tues.

Stewards Council & Voters Pamphlet Creation - Wed Dec 1st - Mon Dec 6th

  • Stewards come together in a call open to the whole community to decide how many proposals are making to the runoff (between 3-5)
  • Because of the potential for votes to be split amongst forked proposals that are similar, the community stewards will choose the top submissions that best represent the community signal for the runoff.

Runoff - Tues, Dec 7th - Monday Dec 13th

  • The top proposals will be submitted for a Quadratic Ranked Choice voting on Snapshot.
  • Vote for your favorite params in order of preference.
  • Snapshot only has Ranked Choice voting, so new tokens will be minted for all TECH token holders with the square root of their original amounts if we haven’t made a better custom solution.

Oops! I edited the original post without intending to!

Praise lauren for pointing it out… I meant to just make a comment!

I think if there is no pushback for the delay we should edit the original post so it doesn’t look confusing  I’ll wait until soft gov tomorrow and if we are good to go I’ll change it

the original post is updated now with the new schedule

Thanks for the info and introduction to the tool at the param party.
While I’m still new I would like to make a serious attempt to come up with parameters that are at least reasonable. I have some questions that might help figure out some of these params. I also want to know more about the Commons from the people that are making it. Feel free to add any context that can help!

  1. What are the top 3-5 Objectives the Commons is aiming to achieve in the next 3-6 months? next year? Any specific outcomes you will like to see?
  2. Do we a goal (or range) of how much money we’re trying to raise? What are the overall plans to spend the money?
  3. How big is the DAO trying to be in the next 1-5 years? how many engaged participants are you expecting?
  4. How long do you expect people to be invested in the project? (i.e. time between buying and selling)
  5. Is the DAO trying to become fully decentralized or keep it close to those committed to the mission?
  6. How risk-averse is the DAO? For example, what’s the lowest Reserve Ratio it is willing to accept?

Thanks,
Cesar

These are great questions!! It’s hard to know the thoughts of the DAO… as its a diverse set of token holders with various opinions… but I’ll tell you what I see from my perspective.

  1. I think it’s hard for anyone to say what our objectives are… It’s a DAO decision… The goal is to advance token engineering… people will propose ideas and they will compete for token holder votes via Conviction Voting. Here is the mission statement: Mission, Vision and Values - TEC Handbook

  2. We raised 1.5 mil already, and it seems like there is about 150-200k of spending expected in the first 3 months by active working groups and we probably want to support projects like the TE Academy…

  3. From 1-5 years… man I hope the TEC is huge 5 years from now and is adding value to ecosystem so we can turn off the bonding curve and have created a regenerative token economy… In the end, the TEC, if it is creating value, can out grow it’s ABC and become a normal free floating token. I would expect to grow to 100’s of engaged participants

  4. I am expecting most people to be long term holders. If you believe advancing token engineering is a benefit for society… parking capital here is an impact investment.

  5. Fully Decentralized… And I think that it will be Fully Decentralized at the commons upgrade… not sure that there is any identifiable single point of failure after that.

  6. That is an open question… There will be a variety of Reserve Ratios put out there and we will see what the TECH holders think.

UPDATE!!

There has been an expressed need for more time to create parameter proposals, so we discussed extending the deadline amongst the Stewards and with the Holiday Season approaching, extending a week would set us up to launch at a time when many of the leaders of the community would be taking vacation and taking time to spend with their family.

So we discussed extending it much more then a week. This will allow us to do a lot more Token Engineering education with the dashboard via Param Parties, and allow more community members time to attend Parameter debates to share ideas think through and improve our economic design.
Here is my proposal after an initial Advice Process from the stewards.

Propose & Debate - Fri, Nov 19th - Thu, Dec 16th

  • Param Parties in external Discords and both Param Parties and Param Debates in our Discord
  • Voting should be done lightly; it only curates for interesting proposals for forking and debating. VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK! TREAD LIGHTLY!
  • Most if not all run-off proposals will be made during this time

Debate & Rock the Vote - Fri, Dec 17th - Tues, Dec 21st

  • No Param Parties, only Param Debates in our Discord.
  • proposals made here will have lower visibility (fewer debates) and will have trouble making it to the runoff.
  • Voting should be done after going to your last debate; VOTES CAN NOT BE TAKEN BACK!
  • Voting ends during the Sof Gov meeting on Tues.

Stewards Council & Voters Pamphlet Creation - Wed Dec 21st - Thurs Jan 6th

  • Stewards come together in a call open to the whole community to decide how many proposals are making to the runoff (between 3-5)
  • Because of the potential for votes to be split amongst forked proposals that are similar, the community stewards will choose the top submissions that best represent the community signal for the runoff.
  • We will build a Voters pamphlet that compares the most important aspects of the various proposals that were brought up during the debates and make it easily digestible for busy people that are paying less attention.

Runoff - Fri, Jan 7th - Thurs, Jan 13th

  • The top proposals will be submitted for a Quadratic Ranked Choice voting on Snapshot.
  • Vote for your favorite params in order of preference.
  • Snapshot only has Ranked Choice voting, so new tokens will be minted for all TECH token holders with the square root of their original amounts if we haven’t made a better custom solution.

The dates above were decided in a somehow rushed process and concerns were raised in the Stewards wg. Tam hosted a session for us to reflect on what had happened and take actions to improve.

The intention for delaying the votes was the lack of quality proposals. So we should consider this as a metric moving forward to avoid running into the same problem when simply moving timelines.

What does it mean to have quality proposals?
Griff suggested having at least 5 people that are happy to campaign for a polished proposal.
So we would have at least 5 quality proposals as a check mark to move forward.

The evaluation of this metric will happen on Dec 16th, and if everything is looking good we can move forward with the dates stated above, otherwise, a new advice process will start to decide next steps to accomplish our metric.

Meanwhile, the param parties and debates are happening in full force

~ an initial advice process for implementing this metric was held in the stewards wg with no pushbacks, please share your opinions and concerns if you have them.

How many tokens are we generally putting behind a given proposal they like?

And what’s peoples’ take on voting for your own proposal [especially if you really like it! ].

Voting is quadratic so eventually the marginal cost of adding 1 more vote to your proposal gets to be more than is worth it so you start to spread your vote to other proposals you like… Everyone will end up splitting their vote between many proposals

I don’t think voting on your own proposal is a problem if you believe that is the best option for the Commons

Does this…

Mean that people are to post their favourite proposals here and 5 “likes” means it’s supported?

If so I really think this should perhaps be another forum post with a new title where that is made abundantly clear.

It just means having 5 proposals that are backed by at least one person each. So we have 5 different proposals and 5 different people backing them. This will give us a minimum diversity of opinions and perspectives.

We reached our metric for moving forward with the dates stated above.

@Tamara is backing Ostrom’s $1,000,000 Hatch, Fledge & Fly! (Commons config proposal #126)
@gideonro is backing Have you heard about "The Fledge"? -- (A TEC Commons Config Proposal)
@Juankbell is backing Vote for Ostrom's 1 million dollar baby for TEC commons config #84
@divine_comedian is backing Vote Bolshevik's Gambit (v4) for TEC Commons Config! - #3 by divine_comedian
@ZeptimusQ for backing Reserve ratio matters, change my mind for TEC Commons Config!

This proposals are just a signaling that we are ready to move forward, they don’t represent any type of voting preference - all proposals on Tokenlog are eligible for votes.
